The active ingredient in Belkyra™ is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Belkyra™ targets and eliminates fat cells when injected into the area under your chin. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is Belkyra™ administered? Belkyra™ is typically given in a 15 to 20 minute in-office treatment session. Your doctor will administer a series of injections into the area under your chin during each treatment session. Your doctor will customize your Belkyra™ treatment based on your treatment goals. Together, you will decide the treatment plan that’s right for you.
How many treatments will I need? Many patients treated with Belkyra™ experience visible improvement of their chin profile in 2 to 4 treatments. Some people require up to 6 treatments in order to achieve their best results. Once your desired results are achieved, additional treatments may not be needed.
Is there downtime? For most people, downtime is minimal and occurs most commonly after the first treatment session. When scheduling your treatments, keep your social plans and work commitments in mind.
Will I experience any side effects? As with other injectable treatments, you may experience side effects with Belkyra™. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain and numbness. In clinical trials most side effects were generally mild to moderate and decreased with subsequent Belkyra™ treatments.
What to expect on treatment day? Prior to administering Belkyra™, your doctor may apply ice/cold packs or a topical and/or injectable local anaesthetic (e.g., lidocaine) to the treatment area in order to make you more comfortable. He or she may also suggest you take an over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment. The treatment session will only last 15-20 minutes and afterwards, you may apply ice or a cold pack to the treatment area for 10 to 15 minutes, as needed. In clinical trials, mild pain was felt right after treatment but decreased rapidly within 15 minutes.
