Aesthetic medicine is constantly evolving, developing numerous non-invasive procedures that effectively address common concerns without requiring prolonged recovery time. Among these, innovative treatments for varicose veins, spider veins, and cellulite stand out—issues we tend to forget about during winter but that will soon demand our attention as spring approaches!
Some medical clinic treatments can be completed in a single visit, while others require multiple sessions. They cause minimal side effects, all of which are minor and temporary—sometimes resulting in slight redness or bruising, which can easily be concealed with tights or pants. This means now is the time to take action if you want to show off your legs when the sunny season arrives!
CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGIES TO COMBAT CELLULITE
Far more common in women, cellulite—an accumulation of fat cells—manifests as lumps and dimples that create an “orange peel” effect, primarily on the thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen. So, what can be done to get rid of it or at least reduce its appearance? We discuss the options with Dr. Christine Caron, general practitioner and medical director at Medicart Saint-Lambert.
What causes cellulite?
Beyond genetics, hormones—particularly estrogen—play a major role. Hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and contraceptive use are all factors that can trigger the appearance of cellulite. Age, poor blood circulation, and wearing excessively tight clothing can also contribute to the problem.
Can it be eliminated?
Completely eradicating cellulite is not possible. However, treatments such as radiofrequency, ultrasound, laser therapy, mesotherapy, and dermal fillers injections can produce highly effective results. These procedures generally target fat deposits and stimulate collagen production to improve skin texture. The results vary depending on the severity of the condition. Liposuction, a surgical procedure, can also improve the appearance of cellulite.
What advanced treatments do you currently offer in your clinic?
We use two treatments based on radiofrequency, performed with state-of-the-art devices.
The first, VelaShape III, features rollers that massage the tissues while simultaneously emitting bipolar radiofrequency and infrared light. This combination heats the tissues deeply while applying gentle suction, optimizing the transfer of energy to fat cells.
The second, Venus Legacy, combines radiofrequency with pulsed electromagnetic fields to generate a heat matrix that stimulates the body’s natural repair process. This pain-free treatment encourages collagen synthesis, leading to visibly smoother skin.
Another option is thermal wave therapy with the Exilis device, which delivers dual-energy transmission. This treatment accelerates the metabolic activity of fat cells to reduce their size while also stimulating collagen production to improve skin texture and combat sagging.
Finally, Radiesse, a biodegradable gel containing calcium microspheres (calcium hydroxyapatite), can be injected directly into the targeted area. This filler stimulates collagen production, enhances skin elasticity, and provides an immediate smoothing effect. It can also be combined with the previously mentioned treatments.
How do you choose the right therapy?
Depending on a patient’s needs, expectations, and budget, treatments can be performed individually or in combination. In all cases, it is essential to consult with a physician who can develop a personalized care plan.
Are creams and lotions effective?
Some topical products claim to tone the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. However, their effectiveness is limited, and results vary. That said, they can complement the treatments provided in our clinic.
